Sometimes when I get home from work it seems like it would be much more enjoyable to call it a day and plop down on the couch. Now that it is unfortunately starting to get darker earlier in the evening, there is a pretty short window between getting in the front door and making the game time decision of whether or not to hit the road. Today it was really looking like it would be a no go. As the sun began to set I settled on the fact that it would have to be a city street run instead of a river run, and therefore, tonight was my short run of the week. To make it a little more enjoyable I created two games:
1. At this point I’ve made it clear that dodging pedestrians is not my scene. Tonight rather than doing my best to slow down and avoid the people meandering about the East Village I decided I would play a little game of chicken. So just like that, I ran straight at each person on the sidewalk, really leaving them only one choice: to get out of my way. I wasn’t doing it to be mean, but I’m starting to feel like it’s mean that they are walking where I am reluctantly running. If it were lighter out I’d run in the park or along the water, but since I couldn’t, we’re going to have to share the sidewalk. It’s amazing what this little game did for my speed. I managed to shave off two minutes per mile. I can’t decide if the time difference is insane or if the insanity stops at my logic behind this little game that I played with myself tonight; and
2. Once I stopped running and started to walk for a cool down, I was hypersensitive to the cabs being out in full force for the night. As the traffic lights approach their changing point, the cab drivers inch closer and closer to the cross walk. I understand that they are in a hurry, but considering that I am walking to cool down I am in anything but a hurry. For this reason, I like to stare down the cab driver as if I am a deer in headlights daring them to approach the line. They won’t.
I sort of feel like I won tonight. And to this end, I deserve a reward 🙂
What I’m running to: No Beef- Afrojack & Steve Aoki
