My internet has been a little crazy going in and out all week so it’s been hard to be consistent with posting. But with training getting serious and simultaneously approaching the end, I am curious about how most runners feel about attending happy hours during training. On the third Thursday of every month, my office throws a “Third Thursday Reception” (aka happy hour). I think most early 20 somethings would agree that free alcohol is hard to turn down when your on a recently out of college budget. It’s a little easier to behave considering that the reception is held at work and we all have to show our faces the next day…but sometimes the other 20 somethings and I make our way out for our own happy hour after….Last night called for a 4 mile maintenance run…Last night called for a post “Third Thursday Reception” happy hour at 13th Step….Last night called for happy hour and a maintenance run.
So I think I have decided that I’m in the camp of thinking it’s possible to train and not give up happy hours. I never really understood when people would say that they were at a bar and the next thing they knew they were running home. I never had that urge. But last night, despite the fact that I indulged in happy hour, I managed to run not 4, but 4.71 miles at an 8:02 minute pace. It’s bizarre considering that my fastest pace prior to last night was 9:30. I thought my Nike + GPS was broken but Anna helped me map the route on map my run when I got home, and to my surprise I had really done it! Maybe it’s the new sneakers; maybe it was the Angry Orchard; or maybe, just maybe, this training stuff has paid off…
I’ll let you know after my long run this weekend!
What do you think? – Are happy hours during marathon training a yay or a nay?
What I’m running to- I Can Only Imagine- David Guetta, Chris Brown & Lil Wayne

I think it's Ok to have happy hour still. I guess my thought is life should still go on..and since you were still fine and did your run the next day, it seems like it's not harming anything, right?!
That's a good way to look at it! I think moderation is key but you should never feel required to give something up completely or miss out on social activities all together.
