Kara Goucher Tweet :)

The only thing better than hearing my running role model congratulate me on a good run on the Nike+ app, is tweeting about it once I finish the run and having her favorite the tweet!

My running career is complete.  Just kidding…my running career has just started and between the Nike+ inspirational words from athletes, and Kara favoriting my tweet, my motivation to train definitely kicked into high gear.

I have been reading Kara Goucher’s Running for Women and have been enjoying it so much that I bought my mom a copy, too.  Everytime I talk to her, she mentions something new that she has learned from the book, so I think it’s safe to say she’s enjoying it also.  Needless to say, when I saw that Kara favorited the tweet, this reaction was appropriate:

It’s a little blurry, but I think that it accurately captures my level of excitement.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Nike+ app, it is a GPS app that provides feedback during and after your run.  I love that it allows you to play music through the app and create power songs to use when motivation is running low and you need that extra burst of energy.  The app also let’s you link to Facebook so that you can get “cheers” from friends, though I haven’t used this feature.  But, it’s safe to say my favorite part of the app is at the end of each run, an athlete or celebrity comes onto the app and congratulates you for completing a run.  I have days where I’d prefer to use my garmin, and days where I’d prefer to use the app, but these little bits of motivational speak really make it worth staying plugged in and pushing harder. (Oh ya, another positive – it’s free to download on an iPhone!)

It seems that lately I have become a nocturnal runner.  Since I’m not much of a morning person, and the past couple of weeks have been hectic, night time running just seems to work better.  When I save my runs for after dark, I like to run the streets/avenues (sidewalks) so that there are people around pretty much at all times.  Despite the little annoyances that come with running the avenues and streets of Manhattan, as opposed to one of the parks or along the rivers, it allows you to experience a different kind of people watching.  Tonight I saw a happy couple skipping; the staff of Dramatics NYC Hair Salon dancing full blown Gangnam Style; and a random dance off ending in an arrest right in the heart of Union Square.  Each of those moments were individually amazing.  I may not be NYC’s #1 fan, but this city sure does make the miles go by quickly.  It’s the little things…

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Do you have a role model that motivates you to stick to a goal?

Do any other runners prefer night time running?

  1. ok, that is crazy cool about the tweet!!

I'm generally mostly a night-time exerciser..but too scared to go running outside in the dark, so it has to be the treadmill for me 😦

  2. That's neat that you got a Favorite by Kara Groucher.

I was on the same patch of grass with Mary Wittenberg yesterday but didn't know it. She stopped by to see the staff of a smaller race organization, as a friendly visit I suppose, or maybe it was a visit on a personal level, but I didn't know it was her. I knew the woman was referred to as “Mary” ahead of her visit, but from her TV appearances I was expecting someone who may look like former NJ governor Christine Whitman.

  3. I got embarrassingly excited!

You're much smarter than I am to not run outside in the dark. I want to break myself of the habit, I just somehow end up having more energy late at night.

  4. In theory I like to run before dinner also, but after a work I'm usually starving so my energy is too low to run. I'm trying to get better at bringing healthy snacks to eat towards the end of the day so that I'm able to run before dinner.

  5. That's awesome! Mary Wittenberg's career and life is really inspiring. I would love to have the opportunity to meet her! I kind of see what you mean about her looking like Christine Whitman.
