Work hard, play hard, and eat Mac n Cheese

Nothing is more motivating than accomplishing a goal.  Normally after I run a marathon or half marathon I give myself a week off, and by week I mean freshman year of college when I ran the NYC Marathon as a bandit runner in November, I didn’t work out again until June.  Moreover, I gained the freshman 15 40 in one semester.  In hindsight, I think that might be an accomplishment in itself – but since that is not the type of accomplishment that I’m looking to achieve this time around, I made my way over to NYHRC for quick and easy workout.

If you remember Jerry Seinfeld’s Calendar Plan from an earlier post, you’ll remember that getting out there and doing anything is better than missing a day all together.  For a little bit of cross-training I jumped on the bike and rode to the top of the fake mountain.  I’m not competitive by nature, but when I watched the little red dot move it’s way towards the top, I wasn’t in any rush to stop.  I had to reach the top.  So I played hard and did it.  Gimpy post-half-marathon legs and all.  This easy and fun workout helped me feel better, too.

Another learning experience – working out the day after a race is better than taking a whole cheesecake to the face (I’d do it again though if you would come home from Japan, Al!)

Tonight there was no cheesecake, but ever since I crossed the finish line I’ve been craving Mac N Cheese and had to get it give in.  Nom nom Nom…

After a race how many days of recovery do you give yourself?  What do you crave most after you run?

  1. I took a day off after Grete's Great Gallop and ran about 6 miles the next day (today). After Yonkers Marathon, I got back to running 4 days later, with daily walks in between.
