Late to the party – always

HAPPY 2013 EVERYONE! I may be a week behind with posting my goals for 2013, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking of goals. Better late than never, right?  It’s not a surprise to anyone, really, that I am late (see # 3 below) so here it goes…

1. Stick to marathon training:  So far so good, but this is abnormal for me to be sticking to the plan.  Here’s hoping it lasts;

2. Stay in touch with friends and family more frequently:  I’m awful at answering texts/phone calls during the work week so I’m hoping to be more mindful of reaching out to all my loves during off hours;

3. Be punctual: I have a tendency to be on my time/my schedule, and I’m realizing more than ever how rude this is, and how much I don’t want to be that girl anymore.  I’m typically 5 minutes (or hours, sorry E) late to everything.  This post is a perfect example.  4 days later, I have arrived.  (Everyone that I have pissed off over the past 24+ years, I sincerely apologize and promise I’m working on this one);

4. Be present: I am a bit of an unsuccessful multitasker and when I’m thinking of a million and one things that I plan to do, I get a little distracted.  I want to be more present and focus on the current moment, current conversation, current person that I am spending time with, etc;

5. Keep up with email: I may be the only person in the world who is not bothered by that little red bubble lurking over my personal email inbox on my phone.  Currently it says I have 49 new emails – but, let me tell you, it lies.  In reality I have 11,801 UNREAD EMAILS. That’s pathetic.  I need an intervention or I need to unsubscribe to the millions of random companies that I’ve signed up to receive mail from.  I glance at my inbox from time to time to make sure there aren’t any urgent emails, but outside of work I haven’t received too many urgent emails;

6. Consistently get a better night of sleep:  I stay up too late and then try to get up to early.  I don’t necessarily need a full 8 hours per night, but I need to put some effort into sleeping so that I stop being so narcoleptic at inappropriate times;

7. Pay off both of my credit cards:  Debt is lame.  Why didn’t I listen to anyone who warned me about opening credit cards?;

8. Save $$$:  If and when I pay off my credit cards;

9. Read more.  I’ve seen a lot of new year’s resolution lists on which people plan to read 100 books.  In an ideal world, I’d jump on that band wagon, but considering it’s taken a full army to persuade me to finish 50 Shades of Grey, and I think I may have only read about 5 books in 2012, I’m going to leave this goal vague and hope for the best;

10. Start taking night/weekend classes.  Someday, somehow, I think I want to be a nurse.  I have a ways to go with the pre-reqs so I’m hoping to get at least 5 classes out of the way this year;

Thanks for forwarding this picture to me, Belle.  Now I remember where this yearning came from.

11. Frequent the gym/utilize the group fitness classes: I want to nurture my obsession for Zumba; develop a passion for yoga; and cure my everlasting fear of spinning (Soul Cycle recap coming soon); and

12. Get organized/stay organized: Poor Anna has heard one too many times about how my room repulses me.  I’m a neat freak wanna-be who just has made the jump yet.

The list is long, but I’m feeling inspired.  Having a full year ahead to tackle these goals is something to be thankful for (Thanks, Mayans, for being absolutely incorrect).

Is anyone else late to the resolution(s) 2013 game? What are you hoping to accomplish this year?

Tonight is the Second Annual New Year’s Eve Round 2 with some of my girlfriends. So now when I think of it, it actually is fitting that I would post my goals tonight.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

  1. I love your goals!
    I thought I was going to stick to a marathon training schedule, but I'm finding that I'd rather run on how I feel lately.
    I used to always go to group fitness classes but that fell off so much – that's a goal of mine this year too!
    And number 6..sleep. I need some sleep this year.
    Also, I am that girl that is ALWAYS on time. Alwaaays. haha!

  2. Thank you! I hope posting goals works as well as posting training stuff has to keep me motivated and accountable haha. You've been doing so great with running! By the time you start training for your fall marathon it will be a breeze. I love going to the group fitness classes, so I'm not sure why I always seem to let it slide. Hopefully we both can make it to more this year. I wish I were the girl that is always on time. It's a great habit that I've never been able to pick up.

  3. That's an ambitious list, Sporadic Runner. Let me suggest that you give audiobooks a try, if you haven't already done so. Nowadays that boils down to either physical CDs or e-media. The public library offers both. You may not get the latest and greatest novels, but there sure are many genres and authors to choose from. Of course you can buy them, too, but then you won't be saving money.

    Combine audiobooks with running, perhaps with earphone on one side, not both, to stay vigilant of the surrounding, and you can cover some miles and chalk off some “books” at the same time.

  4. Being late to your goals just means you were being thoughtful about it! As it goes with communication, especially emails, there are times I consider ditching my cell phone. I don't think it is fair that we are now expected to be reachable at any time; our grandparents got by just fine without it. Then again, I hate talking on the phone, so I always prefer to be texted so I can get back to whoever at my own pace.

  5. I agree! The weird part is whenever I do leave my phone home I end up feeling lost without it. I've developed a love/hate relationship with all of our generations' options for communication!
