#MilesOfShame & #AddictedToEndorphins

I’ve been MIA for a little bit too long, and while a lot has happened in the past week, I want to talk about an awesome challenge before I let too much more time pass!

Last week I came across a lot of tweets that included “#MilesOfShame” and “Put your running shoes where your mouth is.”  The combination of the two phrases piqued my interest, and after a few more clicks through twitter, I was led to PavementRunner’s and NYCRunningMama’s Runner’s Wager.  The wager revolved around the NFC and AFC Championship games.  Each participant picked a team to root for, and if your team lost you had to run the point differential in miles;  if your team won, you won a rest day.  To ensure that each participant followed through with the wager, participants who lost had to post a picture of their garmin, or some other proof of mileage, to twitter or instragram along with “#MilesOfShame.”

I instantly loved this idea!  As a Patriots fan, I naturally chose to root for the Pats on Sunday.  Unfortunately, like many other Patriots fans, not only did I think we would win, but I also did not expect to lose by 15 points!  Though I was disappointed that they wouldn’t be going to the Superbowl, I was actually a little excited to run 15 miles. (WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME?!) I resolved to lace up my sneakers Monday to get it out of the way early in the week.  I also was happy to lace up my sneakers because Sunday was supposed to be a long run but I had guests visiting this weekend for an early birthday celebration.  Between too little sleep and altered food patterns, Sunday’s run was short of amazing (1.5miles 0miles).  My #MilesOfShame run, however, was just what the doctor ordered.

I’m starting to love training because it really makes each mile seem a tiny bit easier, and I feel a tiny bit stronger with each run.

Strong or not, going to a Soul Cycle Class immediately after a 15 mile run may have not been my best idea.  I’m absolutely addicted to spinning now, though.  Plus, Soul Cycle requires you to buy and reserve classes in advance, and I was not willing to lose the class I had purchased.  I may have been strong for the 15 miles, but I certainly struggled through the 45 minutes of spin.  Struggle or not, those Soul instructors really know how to make you leave with a smile.  I’m honestly convinced that they are going to stop letting me go to the studio because my endorphins kick into high gear by the end of the class, and I end up causing a scene on my way out.

Dear Soul Cycle, please forgive my outbursts of excitement.  I got cycling shoes from my parents for my birthday, and I plan to use them a lot in the near future! I promise I’ll try to tone it down.

Did any one else run yet for the Runner’s Wager #MilesOfShame?

Is there a workout class that you’re addicted to?

I hope everyone has a great short week! 🙂

  1. You are amazing!! I simply can't believe you went to SoulCycle after a run like that!

I think I might break down and cry when I get a new personal distance record(anything more than 1/2 marathon).

  2. How ON EARTH could you go do a Spin class right after running 15 miles of shame? Girl, you're just TOO strong!

Hated to see the Pats go out like that……but honestly glad I didn't have to run any shame miles. Those cycling shoes look cool!

P.S. Please tell your blog I'm not a robot!

  3. I actually happened to run 15 miles as well on Sunday morning before the game, totally unaware of the wager. I'm hoping I wasn't the reason for the painful loss… Just a coincidence right??

I certainly hope so because I think I fell in love with Boston and running all over again along the way!

Love this by the way, and happy almost 🙂

  4. That is a lot of fitness in one day, so you should definitely be proud! I love the idea of the run of shame, so I should have got into that. I don't think you can be a part of too many challenges this time of year because we need all the motivation we can get.

  5. Hi Lori!
I have never heard of this but it sounds awesome. My mouth dropped open when I read that you just got up and ran 15 miles one day. Like o.m.g.! You are amazing. I will have to read more about your training and running routines to see just how you do it. I'm training now for a half marathon and felt so happy for you when I read that you feel tiny improvements over your training runs. I sometimes feel like I have my head in the sand when I train because I don't really know/recognize all the good I'm doing. My vision is always 20/20 in hindsight but in the moment, I get frustrated and think that I'm not actually accomplishing anything! Good reminder.

  6. Thank you! By the end of the day I was so relaxed, but today I am definitely hurting. You are doing so great with your long runs! You have really been inspiring me to stick to my training. I'm sure a fifteen mile run will be a breeze for you after all of those long runs that you've been logging recently!

  7. Haha it was definitely the hardest class yet, so I will probably avoid doing a double session like that again!

Thank you so much for letting me know that my blog was asking for word verification. I thought that I turned this off, so I'm sorry for the annoyance! I just changed the settings so hopefully this will not happen again.

  8. Great job on running 15 miles this weekend! I loved your picture of the sunrise a couple weeks ago from when you went running in the morning. You have to teach me to be a morning runner haha… and thank you so much! I miss you Rach!!

  9. Thank you so much! I agree with needing motivation this time of year. This week is supposed to be freezing in New York so I may need to make up my own challenges to make it out the door. PavementRunner and NYCRunningMama hinted at doing the Challenge again for the Superbowl. I'll make sure to post the link to join the challenge if they do it!

  10. Thank you so much Holly! I also have had a tough time with training in the past because I have wanted to see instant improvements. Writing down my daily runs/workouts has really helped me stick to it and see what helps me to improve. I've looked at a few training programs and the one that I'm using for my next marathon can be found here: http://halhigdon.com/training/51135/Marathon-Training-Guide/

The website is great because it has training programs for races of various lengths.

That's really exciting that you are training for a half marathon! Which half marathon are you doing?
